How It all started with our Oma and the baking memories
Where’s the best pastry?
That’s right, at Grandma’s! – Do you remember the time when you went to Grandma’s place and had some delicious pastry? For us this was Omas Kathis’ place. She always welcomed you with: Hi, are you hungry? I would like to share just a little glimpse of my baking memories with Mum!

This is about us and our story
Everything started in Mom’s kitchen. As a little girl I loved watching my mom in the kitchen when she was baking a cake. In our house it was normal to have a freshly baked cake on the table for Sunday’s coffee time. I always had hot chocolate with the cake. To me, my mom was always a master in the kitchen. (of course not only in the kitchen, but that would be another story)
Every Sunday she baked a different cake. One Sunday we had Kaesekuchen (German Cheesecake), the week after she made a strawberry roll, then a Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte (Black forest cake), then an apple strudel. I could continue on with an endless list. I was always with her in the kitchen when she started baking. And she always made sure that there was enough filling, so I got the leftovers on my spoon or even licked out the bowl.
As I got a little older I wanted to help and I was thrilled to get the labor work like peeling the apples for the apple pie or prepping the baking dish. But of course that got boring as I got older and I wanted to be involved in the “real deal”. I wanted to mix things together and stick my finger in the dough to taste if the sugar was completely dissolved. Of course that had to be done secretly.
I will always remember the one day when mom showed me how to mix the dough correctly and my grandma (Oma) came by with her eyes and mouth wide open asking: “What??? You can already mix the cake???” I felt so mature at that moment and I bet I was actually growing a little at that moment.
Years went by and I got more and more responsibility in our baking kitchen. When my mom went to the bakery for the morning buns, I was also always by her side. I knew when I go with her, I will always get a Bretzel for the way home. Some day I asked my mom why we are buying the Bretzel from the bakery and not doing it at home. She looked at me and said: “That is a really good question. Let’s try to do some Bretzels (Pretzels) when we get home. I believe I even have a recipe from Oma at home.”
I believe that day was the last Bretzel we bought from the bakery. We had so much fun baking together and besides all those wonderful cakes, we also made our Bretzels, which of course tasted way better than the ones from the bakery. We knew exactly what was in it. No ingredients we couldn’t pronounce or any artificial stuff. That for me, was the “real deal”.
As more years went by, I married a wonderful man and we became a beautiful son. To this day I think a little part of why he married me was because he loved my Bretzel’s so much. We both became an amazing team in our kitchen and our son was showing off at school with his Bretzels in his lunch box. Making sure that it’s not getting boring, we made some with cheese, sesame, poppy seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and even stuffed Bretzel’s with apple pie mix.
Unfortunately my mom is not with us anymore as she left us in 2017.
Before she left, she made sure her recipes were in good hands and gave me her little binder with her handwritten recipes.
Every day my husband and I are baking our Bretzel’s together, we think of mom, the Oma to our son, and always a little story comes up in our head to talk about. Every Bretzel is handmade with a tremendous amount of love.
